Areas of Giving

Community Improvement
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $14,041,000 in grants toward Community Improvement. In 2008, Community Improvement initiatives included the following:

  • Supporting organizations that provide business training and small business loans to promising entrepreneurs.
  • Assisting organizations that facilitate and equip neighborhood associations and community improvement initiatives.
  • Providing funding for the creation of affordable housing that leads to safe and revitalized neighborhoods.

Education

Education
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $15,601,513 in grants toward Education. In 2008, Education initiatives included the following:

  • Supporting the tuition assistance funds of schools providing quality education and therapeutic services tailored to the special needs of mentally and physically disabled children.
  • Providing low-income students with access to high quality education by contributing to the scholarship funds of private and parochial schools with a track record of high academic achievement and a high rate of college admittance.
  • Encouraging the betterment of public and private education by providing grants for enrichment programs, staff training and capital improvements. The Foundation also supports access to early education for underserved children.

Human Services

Human Services
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $9,954,780 in grants toward Human Services. In 2008, Human Services initiatives included the following:

  • Supporting organizations that address all challenges connected with poverty by providing food assistance, vocational training, life skills classes, mentoring, legal assistance and programs for formerly incarcerated persons.
  • Addressing the cycles of child abuse and domestic violence by supporting programs that seek to prevent, treat and heal the wounds associated with abuse.
  • Funding programs designed to address the continuum of foster care related needs through the recruitment, training and support of foster parents and through providing therapy, enrichment and advocacy services for children in the foster care system.

Medical Care Services

Medical Care Services
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $28,956,075 in grants toward Medical Care Services. In 2008, Medical Care Services initiatives included the following:

  • Assisting community clinics in fulfilling their mission of providing affordable, quality healthcare to uninsured and underinsured children and adults.
  • Aiding organizations that provide access to specialized medical care for low-income persons, including those with breast health concerns, birth defects and chronic illnesses.
  • Providing funding for the construction and renovation of health clinics and public hospitals to increase their capacity to serve the health needs of the community.

Mental Health Services

Mental Health Services
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $1,067,585 in grants toward Mental Health Services. In 2008, Mental Health Services initiatives included the following:

  • Championing agencies committed to providing affordable mental health counseling services for low-income adults and children.
  • Helping to sustain programs that serve individuals with an array of mental disabilities, such as autism, developmental delays, Down syndrome, and others.
  • Assisting organizations offering wrap-around services such as housing, jobs and job training, peer support, case management, and social and recreational activities to persons with mental illness.

Youth Programs

Youth Programs
Through 2008, the Foundation has approved $5,435,931 in grants toward Youth Programs. In 2008, Youth Programs initiatives included the following:

  • Affording low-income children with the opportunity to participate in week-long Christian summer camp experiences.
  • Supporting after-school and summer programs addressing the challenges faced by low-income children with services such as mentoring, tutoring, character development, life skills classes, and health and recreation activities.
  • Ensuring access to enrichment activities and academic enhancement programs that advance the healthy development of underserved youth.
